Friends astonished by Paul Wong’s statement
3 Dec – Despite Paul Wong’s explanation as to why he threatened to kill his father, close friends and industry colleagues were sceptical with the excuse, and suspected the former Beyond member of mental issues.
According to HK Channel, Paul Wong clarified his threats toward his own father which he had expressed in an emotional 300-word letter posted in Weibo on 22 November. He stated that he was enraged that his father pushed his wife Athena Chu during a squabble when Athena refused to let him take her daughter outside.
However, friends who read and heard about the issue were shocked with what he had to say. In his statement, Paul implied that his father had been abusive to his mother, and later to Paul’s own wife.
To this, a close friend to his family stated, “Paul’s father is 80-years-old and is currently wheelchair-bound. Paul even announced on Weibo last year that his father suffered a serious stroke. It’s impossible for him to be physically abusive to Athena with such physical disabilities.”
His other friends also dismissed Paul’s statement that his father had been abusive to his mother, saying, “His parents had divorced many years ago and the man single-handedly raised his three sons. They rarely saw their mother.”
They also claimed that Athena has always been close with her father-in-law as she used to stay with him in their village house in Tai Po prior to her pregnancy.
Meanwhile, friends of Athena’s expressed their worries that there is something wrong with Paul, as the musician’s strong statements against his father is different from his usual commendation of the old man.
Both Paul and Athena have yet to address the issue.
